Celebrating University Mental Health Day: maintaining mental health in everyday student life to keep you on track

Driving awareness around the importance of maintaining mental health as a student in university; insights and resources from UMHD’s co-founder, Students Minds.

We know life as a university student is not easy. Trying to manage daily life on your own for the first time – between courses, social life, extracurriculars, and plans for the future – it can be daunting and overwhelming. We’re here to help you cope with these feelings and tackle these challenges. While it’s important to take small steps every day to maintain good mental health, University Mental Health Day is a great opportunity to take inventory of your self-care regime.

Togetherall, an online peer-to-peer mental health support service, has paired up with Student Minds, a co-founding charity of University Mental Health Day, to provide you with resources to manage your daily mental health and help keep you on track before you get to a point where you’re overwhelmed. Togetherall believes in granting every university student access to mental health support whenever and wherever they need it, while Student Minds works to ensure no student is held back by their mental health. The two organisations are here to remind you on #UniMentalHealthDay that they have your back — today and every day!

#UniMentalHealthDay and places to turn for support

University Mental Health Day is an annual event organised by Student Minds and UMHAN (University Mental Health Advisers Network) to get everyone talking about student mental and making it a priority for all universities. On 13th March, 2025 students and allies across the country run events, share stories, fundraise, and so much more all to help ensure no student is held back by their mental health

There are around 2.94 million students currently studying in UK universities. We also know there is an increasing number of students accessing support services and experiencing distress and mental illness. Student Minds research from 2023 found that:

  • 1 in 4 students have a diagnosed mental health issue.
  • 30% said their mental health has gotten worse since starting university.
  • 1 in 4 students would not know where to go to get mental health support at university if they needed it.

This is why University Mental Health Day and Student Minds exist: to advocate for students and their communities, to make everyone aware that the stigma around mental health doesn’t need to carry on, and that by working together we can cause real, impactful change.

How Togetherall and online peer-to-peer support can help

Togetherall is an online mental health support service offered through your university. Many universities across the UK offer Togetherall (and new ones adding all the time!); we’ve included a link below so you can search for your university and see for yourself. Your uni may already have it, and you could be accessing 24/7 peer-to-peer support now for free!

What is online peer-to-peer support?

Togetherall’s mental health support community is a safe, online space for you to share your feelings with others. The community is made up of hundreds of thousands of members, many of them going through similar experiences to yours. Struggling through that assignment, especially with depression and/or anxiety, can be debilitating – we get it, and so do many others on Togetherall.

The platform is accessible 24/7/365, wherever you have an internet connection, meaning you can be at school, on break, at home, or wherever, and you can access in-the-moment mental health support when you need it, from peers who understand what you’re going through.

Here’s what you’ll find on Togetherall:

  • Explore the community: Share your thoughts or find comfort in reading about others’ experiences – you’re in control.
  • Access resources: Dive into a wide range of self-help courses and expert articles tailored to support your mental health.
  • Engage anonymously: Participate in open conversations, sharing as much or as little as you like.
  • Rely on 24/7 support: Access Togetherall anytime, anywhere. Help is always available, whenever you need it.

About Student Minds & UMHD

Student Minds is the UK’s student mental health charity. We have a clear mission – no student should be held back by their mental health. We empower students to build their own mental health toolkit to support themselves and their peers through university life and beyond. We challenge the higher education sector, health sector, and government to make student mental health a priority.

University Mental Health Day began in 2008 and at Student Minds we have been running it since 2012 as a campaign to get the nation talking about student mental health. Over the past 13 years it has continued to grow, reaching more people, spreading the word about the need for student mental health to be a priority.
